What Is a Throw-Up in Graffiti?

The short answer

A throw-up — also spelled “throwup” and often shortened to throwie — is a graffiti name written quickly in large, rounded bubble letters. It usually has a one-color outline filled with a single other color, so it covers a lot of wall fast while still reading clearly from a distance.

It sits right in the middle of the graffiti ladder: bigger and bolder than a tag, but far quicker and simpler than a full piece.

Why writers do throw-ups

The throw-up exists to solve one problem: getting up a lot, fast. Because it’s quick to paint, a writer can put their name in many places in a short time. In graffiti culture, being seen everywhere — “getting up” — builds a reputation, and the throw-up is the classic tool for it.

It’s a balance of speed and visibility: more presence than a tag, less risk and effort than a piece.

What a throw-up looks like

Most throw-ups share a few traits:

• Bubble letters — rounded, inflated shapes that are quick to outline.
• Two colors — typically one outline color and one fill, sometimes just an outline left empty.
• Two or three letters — short names read faster and paint faster.
• Big and bold — sized to be legible from across a street.

Where it fits
