A plain-English guide to the main graffiti lettering styles — wildstyle, bubble, block, blockbuster, and 3D — and how to tell them apart.
Lettering is the language
Graffiti is, at its core, stylized letters. Over decades writers developed recognizable styles of shaping those letters. Knowing a few of the main ones makes any wall easier to read.
The main styles
- Bubble — rounded, inflated letters. Fast and friendly; the classic look of a throw-up.
- Block / Blockbuster — big, simple, rectangular letters built for maximum coverage and readability, often used to claim large surfaces fast.
- Wildstyle — complex, interlocking letters packed with arrows, spikes, and connections. Hard to read by design and considered one of the hardest styles to master.
- 3D — letters rendered with depth and perspective so they appear to pop off the wall, sometimes dropping the outline entirely.
How to tell them apart
A quick rule of thumb: if it’s round and quick, it’s bubble; if it’s big and boxy, it’s block; if you can barely read it, it’s probably wildstyle; and if it looks like it’s floating off the wall, that’s 3D. Most full pieces mix several of these.
