Graffiti has its own vocabulary. Here are the terms you’ll run into most, in plain English.
Core terms
- Writer — a person who does graffiti.
- Tag — a writer’s stylized signature. See what is a tag.

- Piece — a full masterpiece. See what is a piece.
- Get up — to put your name in as many places as possible.
- All city — well-known across an entire city for getting up.
Reputation & rank
- King / Queen — a writer widely respected for skill or sheer presence.
- Toy — an inexperienced or unskilled writer (a mild insult).
- Burner — an especially impressive, “burning” piece.
- Fresh — clean, new, well-executed work.
- Bite — to copy another writer’s style.
On the wall & off
- Buff — to remove or paint over graffiti. When a city cleans a wall, the work gets buffed. (Yes — it’s where the name Never Buffed comes from: here, nothing gets buffed.)
- Cap — the nozzle on a spray can; different caps make thin or fat lines.
- Spot — a location where graffiti is painted.
- Crew — a group of writers who paint together under a shared name.
