What Is a Piece in Graffiti?

The short answer

A piece — short for masterpiece — is a large, complex graffiti artwork made with multiple colors, careful letter construction, and added effects like shadows, highlights, and 3D. It’s the most advanced and time-consuming form of graffiti, and it’s where writers show their full skill.

Where a tag takes seconds and a throw-up takes a minute or two, a piece can take hours.

What goes into a piece

A finished piece usually layers several elements:

• Letter structure — a deliberate, often stylized arrangement of the writer’s name.
• Fill — blends, fades, and patterns inside the letters.
• Outline — a clean line that defines the shapes, sometimes doubled for depth.
• Effects — highlights, shadows, 3D extensions, and a background.

Because of all this, pieces are usually painted where a writer has time: legal walls, yards, and dedicated spots.
